Join local watercolour artist and stationery designer, Kate Hall, for a special workshop inspired by Monet’s iconic waterlilies. In this beginners’ workshop you will learn to mix, layer and blend colour, embracing the fluid medium of watercolour. Throughout the workshop you will observe live demonstrations and follow step-by-step tutorials, to paint a detailed waterlily set against a beautiful impressionist background.

This workshop will take place on our balcony overlooking our artists’ garden and Monet inspired wildflower meadow (weather permitting – the workshop will move indoors in adverse weather conditions).

All materials will be provided. 

Suitable for those aged 16+ (under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult at all times)

This workshop is part of our National Treasures: Monet in York exhibition events programme. Entry to the exhibition and our permanent collections is included in the price.

Set in the beautiful surroundings of York Art Gallery’s Studio space, this 2 hour workshop gives opportunity for discovery and time to explore a variety of art materials and inspiring themes designed to promote wellbeing.
Enjoy the company of others, creating art with gentle guidance from artist Griselda Goldsbrough.  For adults (16+ only) and running one Sunday each month, there is no need to book for this workshop, session will start at 10:30am and run for approximately 2 hours, it is a practical art session which is suitable for all abilities.

Academics from varied disciplines take Monet’s The Water-Lily Pond as a starting point in these half-hour gallery conversations about the artist’s connections with their research.  

In conjunction with Humanities Research Centre, University of York, these talks are part of the Festival of Ideas.

In the unique and creative surroundings of York Art Gallery, Chloe McKay and the Stables Yoga Centre present a series of flowing hatha yoga classes. These sessions will help you slow down, feel grounded and inspired. You’ll be guided through a series of poses to help release physical tension and connect you to your body and breath. Mindfulness techniques will offer calm to a busy mind. The class will end with a short relaxation leaving you to enjoy the beautiful setting accompanied by a sense of deep ease.  

Chloe is a resident teacher at the Stables Yoga Centre. She has 15 years of teaching experience in a variety of styles of yoga ranging from dynamic to restorative. She is influenced by the practice of mindfulness, the mind-body connection and yoga’s capacity to generate positive change. Chloe is also a yoga therapist (Minded Institute) and IFS practitioner working with individuals, supporting a range of mental and physical health challenges. She leads group classes, workshops and yoga retreats throughout the year.

Yoga equipment will be provided, however please bring your own if preferred. 

Suitable for those aged 18+

Hear more about how Monet’s well-known painting has shaped this exhibition and its associated programme from Head of Public Engagement, Curatorial and Collections, Dr Alexandra Woodall. Meet Garden Manager Steve Williams who will talk about how we have linked the indoor and outdoor spaces through planting a Monet-inspired wildflower meadow encouraging creativity and wellbeing in the Museum Gardens.

These informal practical art sessions are for adults only (16+) and are suitable for absolute beginners or those who create regularly.

This series of workshops are based on drawing from observation, creating an atmospheric interpretation of the landscape to represent a sense of place. Each session will have a group introduction, followed by individual support. Weather permitting, we will venture out into the gardens behind the art gallery.
