This weekend is the last chance to see two major exhibitions by York Museums Trust.

Viking: Rediscover the Legend at the Yorkshire Museum, in partnership with the British Museum, has been seen by more than 65,000 people since it opened on May 19. The exhibition features star objects from the museum alongside some of the most significant Viking finds from the British Museum.

Picasso: Ceramics From the Attenborough Collection at York Art Gallery has also been successful, with nearly 28,000 people coming to see the show since it opened on July 28.

This half term is the last chance to see the shows before they come to a close on Sunday November 5.

Reyahn King, Chief Executive of York Museums Trust, said:

“Although very different shows, these exhibitions have both been very popular and demonstrate the Trust’s commitment to bringing the best art and culture to York.

“Picasso is one of the most famous artists in the world and the generous loan of his works from the Attenborough family and the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, Leicester, has proved to be the perfect summer show for the Gallery’s Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA). His ceramics are displayed alongside works by artists from the same period, showing the inspiration he had on others and also the contrasting styles.

“Viking: Rediscover The Legend has combined our fantastic objects and expertise with star objects from the British Museum to create a completely new exhibition for York. The Virtual Reality of the Viking winter base, Torksey, is a world first and has really captured the imagination of visitors of all ages. The good news is that if you do miss it this half term, the exhibition is going on tour around the country, helping to promote York’s rich heritage to an even wider audience.”

Both exhibitions are included in the admission price. Visit the York Art Gallery and Yorkshire Museum websites for more information on current and future exhibitions.

Following display at the Yorkshire Museum, Viking: Rediscover the Legend will be going on tour to the following locations:

  • Djanogly Gallery, Nottingham Lakeside Arts, University of Nottingham – November 24 2017 – March 4 2018
  • The Atkinson, Southport – March 31 2018 – June 3 2018
  • Aberdeen Art Gallery, Aberdeen – June 23 2018 – November 11 2018
  • Norwich Castle Museum, Norwich – February 9 2019 – September 8 2019

Upcoming Exhibitions

At the Yorkshire Museum, Medieval York: Capital of the North will replace the Viking exhibition opening on December 2. From the fifth century, for a thousand years, the North of England was ruled from York. In this new exhibition, showcasing the Yorkshire Museum’s permanent collection of the region’s greatest surviving treasures, explore how York became England’s second city and how its fortunes rose and fell with its ties to the Crown and the Church.

Following the Picasso exhibition at CoCA, there will be the first major retrospective exhibition of one of Britain’s leading ceramic artists, Sara Radstone, opening on November 17.

Sara Radstone: More Than Words will feature 50 works which will look at how her work has changed and developed over the course of a career spanning nearly 40 years. Radstone’s work has been shown all over the world and constantly tests and challenges many of the preconceptions of what ceramic art should be. The exhibition will also include new work created by Radstone especially for the show.
