York Art Gallery

< Back to News

York Art Gallery is currently closed for a major refurbishment. When it reopens in 2015 it will have a new gallery space: the Project Gallery, which will feature displays created by artists and local communities who have worked closely with the gallery and its collections on inspiring and innovative projects.

Open to everyone aged 18 and under.

Your work could be in the first display!

In 1952 York Art Gallery commissioned L.S. Lowry to paint a picture of York. He chose to paint Clifford’s Tower and his painting is now one of the most important modern works of art in the gallery’s collection.

We want you to take Lowry’s painting as your inspiration and create something new that will tell visitors to the Gallery what it is like to live in York today.

Here are a few ideas:

• Reinterpret Lowry’s image with new technology – perhaps by animating it or videoing the scene as it is today
• Write a story, poem or play inspired by the mood and setting of the painting
• Recreate the painting in a different medium – as a sculpture, textile, ceramic or fashion item, or even as a piece of music
• Use Lowry’s style to paint a different York scene, perhaps your school or where you live

Four prizes will be awarded of two days of workshops with an artist in your school for you and your class.

The best artworks entered into the competition will be displayed in York Art Gallery when it reopens in 2015.

If your artwork is chosen for display you will be invited to a special opening event at the Gallery.
