Burton and Beyond: British Art from Victorian to Contemporary

From William Etty to Sarah Lucas, this gallery invites you to explore over 200 years of British art. We have selected some of the many highlights of York Art Gallery’s collection: Victorian paintings exploring rural and family life, early 20th century English Impressionism collected by the Very Reverend Dean Eric Milner-White, abstract painting and sculpture from the mid 20th century, images of women and paintings relating to war and conflict.

Many of the Victorian paintings on display here form part of John Burton’s collection, bequeathed to the gallery in 1882.  A York horse dealer, mine owner, amateur artist and art collector, Burton’s bequest of 126 paintings laid the foundations for a permanent collection of art for York. An eccentric character, his portrait is on display here alongside old favorites such as Hogarth’s Studio and The Volunteers.

Since Burton’s bequest, York Art Gallery’s collection continues to grow through bequest, gift and the purchase of targeted acquisitions, allowing future generations to enjoy art being produced today.

With paintings and sculpture representing 200 years of British art, there is something for everyone. Read (or write) a story on our story chair, draw in our sketch books and touch our beautiful tactile sculptures.
