Special Exhibitions
10 October 2009 - 24 January 2010
This is the first time Japanese Sashiko textiles have been displayed in a major British art gallery.
The exhibition is on show at the gallery from 10 October, 2009 until 24 January, 2010 before going on tour across the nation.
Japanese Sashiko textiles were and are designed to decorate and protect the wearer both physically and spiritually.
Curator, Michele Walker, explained that she chose the objects for the stories they tell and said the last generation of makers are dying out.
The exhibition looks at the lives of women who made and wore Japanese sashiko clothing and also focuses on the spiritual protection associated with Japanese sashiko patterns.
